Description
xVictron Energy smallBMS NG
The Victron Energy smallBMS NG is a compact battery management system designed for use with Victron lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries in smaller off-grid and marine installations. It protects the battery from over-charge, over-discharge and over-temperature conditions, making it suited to systems where a full-featured BMS would be oversized or unnecessary.
Key Features
- Provides cell protection against over-voltage, under-voltage and over-temperature for compatible Victron LiFePO4 batteries.
- Compact and lightweight design at 66 g, suitable for space-constrained installations in boats, campervans and small off-grid cabins.
- Load disconnect output allows the BMS to cut non-essential loads when the battery reaches a low state of charge.
- Charge disconnect output signals chargers to stop charging when the battery is full or a cell fault is detected.
- Next Generation (NG) variant with updated internal architecture for improved compatibility with current Victron LiFePO4 battery range.
- Simple wiring with clearly defined load disconnect and charge disconnect terminals, reducing installation complexity.
Product Overview
The smallBMS NG monitors individual cell voltages and battery temperature within compatible Victron LiFePO4 batteries. When a cell reaches its upper or lower voltage limit, or when temperature exceeds the safe operating range, the BMS activates its disconnect outputs to protect the battery from damage. This is a passive protection approach: the BMS does not actively balance cells but relies on the battery's internal cell balancing and the charger's absorption settings to maintain cell health over time.
The charge disconnect output is typically wired to the remote on/off input of a Victron charger or MPPT solar charge controller. The load disconnect output is wired to a relay or load switch to shed non-critical loads before the battery reaches a damaging depth of discharge. This architecture keeps the BMS wiring straightforward and avoids routing high currents through the BMS unit itself, which keeps the unit small and the installation tidy.
The NG designation indicates this is the current production version, updated for compatibility with Victron's present LiFePO4 battery product range. It replaces the earlier smallBMS variant and should be specified for new installations.

Installation Notes
The smallBMS NG must be used exclusively with compatible Victron LiFePO4 batteries. It is not suitable for lead-acid, AGM, gel or third-party lithium batteries. Wiring should be carried out by a qualified electrician or experienced marine/off-grid installer familiar with lithium battery systems. Incorrect wiring of the charge disconnect or load disconnect outputs can result in battery damage or system failure. Verify compatibility with your specific Victron LiFePO4 battery model before installation.
