Description
xVictron Orion-Tr Smart 24/24-12A (280W) Isolated DC-DC Charger
The Orion-Tr Smart 24/24-12A is a galvanically isolated DC-DC battery charger designed for dual-battery systems where both the source and load operate at 24V. It delivers up to 12A (280W) of charge current and is managed via Bluetooth, making it well suited to vehicles, marine installations and off-grid systems where a starter battery must be kept separate from a service or leisure battery.
Key Features
- Galvanic isolation between input and output eliminates ground loop issues and protects sensitive electronics in dual-battery installations.
- Built-in Bluetooth allows configuration and monitoring via the VictronConnect app on iOS and Android, with no additional hardware required.
- Adaptive 3-stage charging algorithm (bulk, absorption, float) conditions the output battery properly rather than simply maintaining a fixed voltage.
- Input voltage range accommodates real-world 24V system voltages, including those with engine-running alternator boost.
- Engine detection function prevents excessive drain on the starter battery by only charging when the alternator is active.
- Compact, wall-mountable enclosure weighing 1.3kg suits installations with limited space.
- Configurable charge profiles allow the unit to be matched to AGM, gel, lithium (LiFePO4) and other battery chemistries.
Product Overview
The Orion-Tr Smart range differs from basic DC-DC converters by incorporating a full battery charging algorithm rather than simply stepping voltage up or down. At 280W output, the 24/24-12A variant is capable of maintaining a 24V service battery from a 24V vehicle or vessel electrical system without the two battery banks sharing a common ground. The galvanic isolation is particularly important in marine environments, where stray current corrosion is a genuine risk, and in any installation where the chassis grounds of two systems must remain independent.
Configuration is handled entirely through VictronConnect over Bluetooth. Charge voltage, absorption time, float voltage and tail current can all be adjusted to suit the battery chemistry on the output side. The engine detection feature monitors input voltage and only enables charging once the alternator raises the bus voltage above a user-defined threshold, protecting the starter battery from being discharged by the service bank when the engine is off.
The unit can also be used in a load output mode, acting as a stabilised 24V supply rather than a charger, which broadens its application beyond simple battery-to-battery charging. It is compatible with the Victron VE.Smart networking ecosystem, allowing it to share battery voltage and temperature data with other Victron devices on the same Bluetooth network for coordinated charging.

Installation Notes
Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician or experienced 12/24V systems installer. Ensure correct cable sizing and fusing on both the input and output sides in accordance with the unit's rated current. In marine applications, follow BMEA or equivalent wiring standards. The unit must be mounted in a ventilated location away from direct water ingress. For lithium battery outputs, verify that the charge profile is correctly configured in VictronConnect before commissioning. This unit is not grid-connected and does not require G98 or G99 compliance, but any wider system integration should be reviewed by a competent person.
