Description
xVictron Orion-Tr 48/48-8A (380W) Isolated DC-DC Converter
The Victron Orion-Tr 48/48-8A is a galvanically isolated DC-DC converter rated at 380W, designed for 48V to 48V applications where electrical isolation between input and output is required. It is suited to professional off-grid, marine, vehicle and industrial installations where two separate 48V systems must be connected without a shared ground reference.
Key Features
- Galvanic isolation between input and output, eliminating ground loop issues and protecting sensitive equipment on either circuit.
- 48V input to 48V output at up to 8A continuous output current, delivering 380W of regulated DC power.
- Wide input voltage range typical of the Orion-Tr series, accommodating real-world battery voltage fluctuations across charge and discharge cycles.
- Compact, enclosed aluminium housing with a weight of 1.8kg, suitable for fixed installation in confined spaces.
- Designed for continuous duty, making it appropriate for permanent installations rather than occasional or intermittent use.
- Compatible with Victron's broader 48V system ecosystem, including lithium and lead-acid battery banks.
Product Overview
Galvanic isolation is the key distinction of the Orion-Tr range over non-isolated DC-DC converters. When two battery systems share a common ground, faults, leakage currents and noise can pass between them. The Orion-Tr's transformer-based isolation breaks this path entirely, which matters in applications such as split charging on vehicles with sensitive electronics, marine installations with corrosion concerns, or industrial systems where regulatory or safety requirements demand isolated circuits.
The 48/48-8A variant maintains the same nominal voltage on both sides, which may seem counterintuitive for a converter. In practice, this is used where a regulated, isolated 48V supply is needed from a 48V source that may vary in voltage. Battery voltage under load or during charging can swing considerably, and the Orion-Tr conditions that input into a stable, regulated output voltage. This protects downstream loads and ensures consistent performance regardless of the state of charge of the source battery.
At 380W continuous output, this unit is appropriate for powering 48V loads such as DC equipment, secondary battery banks or auxiliary systems. The enclosed housing and passive cooling design keep installation straightforward, with no fan noise or moving parts to maintain.

Installation Notes
Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician or systems integrator with experience in DC power systems. Ensure input and output wiring is correctly rated for the current and voltage involved, and that appropriate fusing is fitted on both the input and output sides. Verify polarity before energising the unit. For marine installations, follow NMEA or flag state wiring standards as applicable. Do not install in locations exposed to water ingress or where ventilation is restricted to the point of heat build-up.
