Description
xVictron Centaur Charger 12/50(3) 120-240V
The Victron Centaur Charger 12/50(3) is a three-output, 50-amp battery charger designed for 12V battery banks. It accepts a wide AC input range of 120 to 240V, making it suitable for use across the UK, Europe and North America. Built for professional and commercial installations where reliable, automatic battery charging is required.
Key Features
- 50A total charge current output for 12V battery systems, split across three independent outputs.
- Wide AC input voltage range of 120 to 240V accommodates varying supply voltages without manual adjustment.
- Fully automatic multi-stage charging algorithm (bulk, absorption, float) extends battery service life.
- Three separate outputs allow simultaneous charging of multiple battery banks, such as starter, service and bow thruster batteries.
- Compatible with a wide range of battery chemistries including flooded, gel and AGM lead-acid batteries.
- Temperature-compensated charging adjusts charge voltage automatically to protect batteries in varying ambient conditions.
- Microprocessor-controlled with built-in protection against reverse polarity, short circuit and overheating.
Product Overview
The Centaur range uses a fully automatic three-stage charging process. During bulk charge, the charger delivers maximum current to bring the battery up to approximately 80% capacity quickly. The absorption stage then holds voltage constant while current tapers off, completing the charge without overcharging. Float mode maintains the battery at full charge without causing gassing or electrolyte loss, which is particularly important for installations where the charger remains connected for extended periods.
The three-output design is a practical feature for marine, vehicle and off-grid installations where multiple battery banks need to be maintained independently. Each output is isolated, so the state of one bank does not affect the charge delivered to another. The wide AC input range means the same unit can be used on shore power supplies that vary between 120V and 240V, which is useful on vessels that travel between regions or connect to different marina supplies.
Temperature compensation is handled via a built-in sensor. If an external battery temperature sensor is connected, the charger adjusts its charge voltage to account for battery temperature, preventing undercharging in cold conditions and overcharging in hot environments. This is a straightforward but important feature for installations in engine rooms or exposed outdoor enclosures.

Installation Notes
Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician or experienced marine/vehicle electrician familiar with DC battery systems. Ensure the AC supply is correctly fused and that all DC output connections are made with appropriately rated cable and fusing for a 50A charge current. The unit should be mounted in a ventilated location away from direct water ingress. For marine installations, follow the relevant BMEA or RYA wiring guidelines. Confirm battery chemistry compatibility before selecting the charge profile.
