Description
xVictron Energy 12V 90Ah Gel Deep Cycle Battery
The Victron Energy 12V 90Ah Gel Deep Cycle Battery is a sealed, maintenance-free lead-acid battery designed for cyclic and standby applications in solar, off-grid and marine systems. It uses gel electrolyte technology, making it suitable for installations where battery orientation or ventilation is a constraint. Rated at 90Ah capacity at the C20 rate, it is a practical choice for professional installers specifying reliable energy storage in demanding environments.
Key Features
- 90Ah capacity rated at the C20 discharge rate, providing a consistent and predictable energy reserve for system sizing.
- Gel electrolyte construction eliminates free liquid acid, reducing the risk of spillage and allowing installation in confined or non-upright positions.
- Deep cycle design supports repeated charge and discharge cycles, making it suitable for daily solar cycling rather than engine-start or float-only applications.
- Sealed, valve-regulated (VRLA) construction requires no topping up with distilled water and produces minimal off-gassing under normal operating conditions.
- 12V nominal voltage allows straightforward series and parallel configuration to build 24V or 48V battery banks.
- Manufactured by Victron Energy, with consistent quality control and compatibility with the full range of Victron charge controllers, inverter-chargers and battery monitors.
- Weight of 22.5 kg reflects the dense lead-acid construction typical of this capacity class.
Product Overview
Gel batteries differ from standard flooded lead-acid batteries in that the electrolyte is immobilised in a silica gel matrix. This prevents stratification and reduces water loss, which extends service life in cyclic applications compared to conventional wet-cell batteries. The sealed construction also means the battery can be installed on its side if required, though upright is always preferred where space allows.
At 90Ah (C20), this battery is well suited to small-to-medium off-grid systems, solar storage banks, narrowboat and marine house battery installations, and backup power applications. When sizing a bank, note that gel batteries should not routinely be discharged below 50% depth of discharge (DoD) to preserve cycle life. Charge voltage settings must be configured correctly for gel chemistry: using AGM or flooded profiles will shorten battery life. Victron MPPT charge controllers and MultiPlus inverter-chargers include a dedicated gel charge profile.
Multiple units can be connected in series to achieve 24V or 48V system voltages, or in parallel to increase capacity. When building a battery bank, use batteries of the same age, capacity and manufacturer to ensure balanced charging and discharging across the bank.

Installation Notes
Although this is a sealed gel battery, installation in a well-ventilated enclosure is still recommended as a precaution. Ensure the charge source (MPPT controller, inverter-charger or mains charger) is set to the correct gel charge profile before connecting. Incorrect charge voltages, particularly overcharging, will permanently damage gel cells. For solar PV and off-grid system installations, connection by a qualified electrician or MCS-accredited installer is recommended. When building multi-battery banks, ensure all interconnecting cables are of equal length and cross-section to maintain balanced current distribution.
